Review of Health and Medical Research in Australia

The Strategic Review of Health and Medical Research in Australia was established by the Australian Government in late 2011. The Review is to report by the end of 2012 and recommend a 10-year strategic health and medical research plan for the nation.

 

The Panel is chaired by 2011 Australian of the Year, Mr Simon McKeon. The other members of the expert panel are:

  • Ms Elizabeth Alexander AM;
  • Professor Henry Brodaty AO;
  • Mr Bill Ferris AC;
  • Professor Ian Frazer; and
  • Professor Melissa Little.

The Panel first met in November 2011 and held its fifth private meeting on Wednesday 4 April 2012 in Canberra.

The Panel called for written submissions on 4 February 2012, with submissions due by 30 March 2012. The Review has received over 300 submissions, many of which are from key stakeholders in health and medical research.

Consultations have been scheduled for each capital city of Australia and both private meetings with major stakeholders and a public workshop with all other interested stakeholders, including members of the public, will be held in each city. Public consultations commenced in mid-April 2012 and will continue through until July.

The Review's public meeting schedule is as follows:

  • Hobart : 18 April 2012 — Completed
  • Canberra : 19 April 2012 — Completed  
  • Melbourne : 1 May 2012 — Completed
  • Darwin : 8 May 2012 — 2.00 pm , Venue: Crowne Plaza, 32 Mitchell Street
  • Brisbane : 29 May 2012 — (afternoon) time & venue TBA
  • Adelaide : 5 June 2012 — (afternoon) time & venue TBA
  • Perth : 6 June 2012 — (afternoon) time & venue TBA
  • Sydney : 5 July 2012 — (afternoon) time & venue TBA
